The records consist of 42 volumes of pocket diaries for the years 1906, 1910, 1912, 1914-26, and 1928-43. The last entry, his usual morning recording of the weather, was penned only moments before he was stricken. Russell usually recorded full accounts of his daily activities, personal and family-related as well as his business trips and meetings, and as mundane as trips to the barber and where he ate. He notes larger events of the day, such as the Crash of 1929, Pres. Roosevelt's inauguration, and the bombing of Pearl Harbor, or war rationing, but without much depth. At the back of each volume there is usually a listing of charitable donations, tax and mortgage payments and the like. The 43rd volume is a memorandum book from 1931 with notes and sketches of the setup for specific dynamite blasts.

Samuel Reid Russell was born in Belfast, Ireland, on December 27, 1880. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1904 and joined E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. as a salesman in the Nashville office in 1907. He was soon transferred to the Technical Division of the Explosives Dept., where he rose to the position of Senior technician and a leader in the rigging and supervising of dynamite blasts for demolition, quarrying, and harbor deepening. He died suddenly in the morning of July...
